|19th European Conference on Literacy 2015|
...that was the 19th European Conference on Literacy (former: European Conference on Reading),
having taken place from
13-16 July 2015 in Klagenfurt, Austria, more specifically at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt.
Under the general theme "Literacy in the New Landscape of Communication: Research, Education and the Everyday" the conference created a forum for the presentation and discussion of findings of current research into the range of contemporary forms (‘traditional’ and ‘new’) and uses of literacy in everyday settings: be it the home, kindergartens, school or beyond school, in institutions of teacher training, in libraries, in the context of social work, in text-design and publishing, in (fictional and non-fictional) media programmes, in social media, in sites, formal and informal.
Here it was possible to relate these findings – with their theoretical and methodological focus – to the questions of learning and teaching of reading and writing, of uses and forms of literacy, ‘traditional’ as well as ‘new’. In exchange and discussion of knowledge and experiences, of proposals and hypotheses, the Conference provided a space for bringing literacy researchers and literacy educators together in a shared and strengthened project of developing literacy – in its many forms, uses and genres, including the aesthetic experience and pleasure of literature – as an essential component of democratic action, interaction and participation.
The target groups of this international and multi-lingual conference (presentations in English, German, French, Russian, Spanish) comprised all those interested in ‘moving literacy on’: teacher-educators and teachers, researchers, librarians, students: whether exploring and researching, teaching and promoting reading and writing.
The conference was organized in cooperation with IDEC (International Development in Europe Committee of the International Reading Association; www.literacyeurope.org), FELA (Federation of European Literacy Associations; www.felaliteracy.org), the University of Klagenfurt (www.aau.at) and the University College of Teacher Education Carinthia - Viktor Frankl UC (www.ph-kaernten.ac.at).
